San Suu Kyi, Aung 1945 - . Burmese politician. After studying politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford, Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Burma to care for her sick mother. It was at this time that she joined the movement against the military dictatorship. In 1989 the government placed her under house arrest calling her a dangerous subversive. From the confines of her home she still lead her party, the National League, to victory in elections. This has been ignored by the ruling military government.
